Alberta Recreation and Parks, Communities ChooseWell Program

November 2018

Communities ChooseWell is a program, funded by Alberta Health and managed by the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association, that aims to improve wellness in Alberta, focusing mainly on healthy eating and active living. The awards go to communities that have excelled in this area, with the exception of the one award, that Councillor Judy Acres received, which recognizes an elected official who is a champion for wellness.

Some of the biggest struggles many of our champions face is support on a municipal level - a supportive council can make progress much easier, and a non-supportive one can stop progress in its tracks. So we have made an effort to celebrate an elected official every year that shares these values.

Alberta Recreation and Parks, Communities ChooseWell Program is excited to celebrate the accomplishments of 20 communities and one elected official with their Healthy Community Awards program this year!

The awarded communities have shown a commitment to becoming healthier places to live, and the Community Wellness Leadership Award Recipient is our very own Councillor Judy Acres for her work with the Viking Community Wellness Society Walking Trail Project.

This is the third time we have given this award out (past winners have been councillors for Strathcona County as well as La Crete). Judy was recognized at our President's Awards Banquet at the Jasper Park Lodge.
